Strong but stiff: what your training left out
If you are strong in the gym but stiff everywhere else, the problem is not your genetics and it is not your age. Lifting builds strength in the ranges you train, and most programmes only train short ones. The range you never load, you lose. That is why you can pull a heavy deadlift and still struggle to touch your toes.
Why lifting did not make you flexible
Strength is specific. Your body adapts to exactly what you give it, and a typical week gives it a few fixed bar paths through partial ranges, bracketed by nine hours of sitting. Modern life stripped movement out of your day, and your training never put it back.
So the adaptation you built is real, but narrow. You own the middle of each lift and almost nothing outside it. Tight hips, a stiff upper back and hamstrings that feel short are not signs you trained too hard. They are signs the training was incomplete.
Do you have to choose between strong and flexible?
No. They are built the same way: progressively, under load. Passive stretching on its own rarely holds, because range your nervous system cannot control is range it will not let you keep. The rule that works is simple: earn the range before you load it, then load it so you keep it.
Train long positions with intent (deep squats, loaded hinges through a full range, controlled end-range work) and flexibility stops being a separate chore. It becomes a side effect of complete training.
Is it your age?
Range does not leave because you turned 35. It leaves because nothing in your week asks for it. People decades older move beautifully because they kept asking. Your 30s and 40s are a decision, not a decline.
Athletic, not just strong
Athleticism is strength you can use: at speed, through range, under fatigue, in positions you did not plan. A big bench that cannot become a sprint, a throw or a pain-free weekend is gym performance, not life performance.
That is why the fix is not another accessory day. It is training every physical quality, not just one.
The order that closes the gap
Foundation first: get the range back, because you cannot build real strength on a body that cannot move well. Structure second: build load-bearing strength on top of it, progressively. Detail third: the speed, power and recovery that make you feel athletic again, not just strong in the gym.
Most people do these in reverse, or skip straight to the middle. The order is the method.

What causes a person to not be flexible?
Mostly disuse. Range your week never asks for gets guarded and then lost. Sitting plus short-range lifting is the usual pattern, and it is reversible with training that asks for the range back.
Can you be strong and flexible at the same time?
Yes, and each makes the other more useful. Strength through a full range is the most durable flexibility there is.
At what age is it hard to become flexible?
There is no cliff. Progress is slower at 45 than 25, but the direction is a choice at any age. The people who stay loose are the ones who keep training range, not the ones born with it.
How do I add mobility to a lifting routine?
Do not bolt on a stretching session and hope. Widen the ranges of the lifts you already do, add controlled end-range work where you are most restricted, and progress it like you would a lift.
